Artificial Board Weakness

Artificial board designed and manufactured to avoid problems in solid wood because of its limitations and to allow the production process or good furniture design that can not be applied to solid wood. But nonetheless artificial board has weaknesses. Not compared to solid wood or other materials, but the weakness which is technically must be sought the solution.
Air Water
Artificial board most risky and easily damaged when soaked in water, the water seeped or spilled water into the work piece.
Why? Board of artificial processed and made from several sheets veneer, dust and small wood chips and associated with wood glue does not hold water (there are several types multiplex using waterproof glue -> waterproof plywood). Basically, when artificial boards exposed to water, especially on the thick side, water will be absorbed easily and quickly fill the air cavities in the layers of artificial board and create a bond between the powders, flakes or veneer with glue becomes weaker. Solution: List thick cover of the artificial board (for open construction) is one way of preventing the entry of water into the pores of artificial board. List side can be made of solid wood, plastic or aluminum.
Side Thickness
Cut or split boards should be made use of the saw with saw blade configuration combinations are given the task of the saw is to split and cut (transverse fibers in multiplex). At sawed an artificial board, especially with a handsaw or hand machine you should use base the MDF former or multiplex so thick bottom side is not damaged. With the existing structure, veneer bottom position get risk flaking because of saws pressure. It is very rare in the big machine for cutting artificial board. Beside its tabletop machine that sustains also because the speed of the saw a high turn helps the finer cuts.
Power Tie Screws and Nails
Artificial board has no binding power of nails and screws as well as solid wood. Especially the thick side did not even have the strength, so that put screws or nails on the side thick before coated with the wood trim is not recommended. Screws were better attached to the artificial board instead of nails but for the screws of removable construction (Knock Down) should be avoided. If the design furniture requires putting the knock down screws or stay, one way could be done by put solid wood screw in the right areas that will be installed. Of course this is only effective for the amount of furniture that is not too much. For mass production that it need to be reviewed before laying the screws and nails.
Standard Size
All kinds of artificial board has the same standard sizes as follows:
Length x width
1200 x 2400 mm *)
900 x 2400 mm
1200 x 2100 mm
900 x 2100 mm
1200 x 1800 mm
900 x 1800 mm *)
*) The size of the most widely available in the public market
While the standard thickness of artificial board: 3, 4, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, and 21 mm
In the production of artificial board, of course, there are products with different thicknesses between 0.5 to 1.0 mm and usually the manufacturer will put it in the category of class B or C.
