The Chippendale style furniture
About 1755 year, this style was introduced to American
colonial from England and evolves in 1760 and 1770. As reaction, Baroque and
Queen Anne take delicious food form and funny character. Mahogany any
available on market become wood that many used in cabinet making and rich
ornament carving compare veneer and inlay. The claw and ball-foot become
very popular.
Origin of Chippendale style
Come from England during 1730 and 1740, Chippendale style join from three
substances: French Rococo, Chinese ornamentation, was known from imported
objects, and the Gothic style. These elements often to be added in furniture
that reflect Baroque influence architecture that so popular during Anne
William and Queen Mary period. So, broken pediment, pilaster and classical
entablature remain important section in design furniture, although
Chippendale style to show new substance also.
Rococo style, widely accepted in England during 1740, comes from France
about two decade previously when lighter form curvilinear line more play
introduced. The name comes from France word rocaille, referring to rockwork
or rock forms, and coquille, or shell patterns. Strange and fantastic
combinations of two motives in patterns of asymmetric form element Rococo
Chippendale style.
Chinese Influence on Chippendale style has two main components: west and
imaginative interpretation of Chinese design, called Chinoiserie, and the
actual adaptation of the Far East furniture pieces that are being widely
imported from the East.
As the influence of architecture, Gothic detail is never completely
disappeared from the vocabulary of British design. However, the influence of
Gothic has little or no impact on the furniture in medieval England, and is
often mixed with Gothic elements of Rococo and China making it difficult to
distinguish them.
Was Thomas Chippendale (1718 -1779) that modifies this style, which then
uses his last name once known in Britain and America. Though he, his father,
and her children the entire furniture maker, Chippendale is remembered
primarily for the pattern book called Gentleman and Cabinet-Makers Director,
first published in 1754. This book, and two subsequent editions, illustrates
the combination of Rococo furniture, elements of Chinese, and Gothic.
Director was circulated among the nobility and the cabinetmakers and other
craftsmen in both England and America, but his influence certainly on the
American cabinet shops have not been determined. Chippendale name may not be
synonymous with the style until the 19th century.
Innovative Forms
Some new forms developed during the Chippendale period. Chairs and sofas
continue to be made in the form similar to the style of Queen Anne. Tester
bed made with claw-and-ball feet, not the foot pad, and daybed almost
disappeared. The new model for tea yield new forms of furniture: standing
boiler, contains slides, a small easy to move to hold the cup of tea,
fret-up "table of China," used to store tea service, and an engraved
"piecrust" over the three-legged table is designed to tilt -top tea. Period
Chippendale Pembroke table is also introduced, breakfast table with short
leaves. Candle stands, designed to hold candles, also developed during this
time. Because the case remains very architectural furniture’s, blocking and
bombed important both during the Chippendale period. Secretary-bookcase
comes to plus, especially in England, by breakfront, a piece of architecture
that is contained in several sections, with bookshelves, tables, and
cabinets closed. This form is rare in America. Looking through a glass, also
architectural in form, often shown borrowed elements from the Director.
