Solid Wood and Wood Made
Distinguishing these two types of wood
material is easier to do physically before have been painted/finished or
other coating materials. By looking at these materials directly we can know
the difference. And makes the definition of each of these materials could
make to misunderstandings because some solid wood properties have on board
made. Wood-made is not really the appropriate term from the international
term engineered wood or wood composite.
Solid Wood
Once out of the kiln dry, sawn timber can be processed directly into the
foot of the table, the table board (laminated) or a drawer side board
without going through the process more complicated. Wood is used directly as
we can to think of solid wood. Or when you make the back legs of a chair
that curved from the split and sawed a board in accordance with the arch
legs of the chair, the material is solid wood remains. This means that only
solid wood base materials consist of wood without mixed or in combination
with other material forms. Although in the process we use the connection
laminated, finger joint or other construction to the board on the table for
example, the material is still referred to as solid wood.
Made of wood (engineered wood)
Because some of the weaknesses of wood that does not allow a board wide and
stable, then the start is made of artificial board in various ways
workmanship and type of artificial board. Basically artificial board is to
get a single sheet of board with the risk of changes as small as possible.
Made in various techniques and materials of wood is different, because of
that there are kinds of artificial board called multiplex, block board,
particle board, MDF, soft board, hardboard and the like. All these materials
are made by the board. In some designs a chair leg or a cupboard that
require large-diameter curve, furniture manufacturers use technology to make
veneer laminated curved legs but very strong. This processing is done by
layering several ‘sheets' veneer rather thick and long, and then veneer
pressed on the appropriate design of curved chair leg on the pressure and
high temperature. This process typically uses a glue type of very fast dry
on high temperature. So the end result we can see on the side of the foot is
seen glue lines as layer of veneer.
When a designer wants to make beams for interior or exterior measures 20 x
20 cm), a wood engineer will not give just one solid wood because it would
risk curved, broken or changed shape. To overcome this problem, made
laminate and finger joint that many proportion of wood so get a large size
but the risk of change is much smaller. This type of material called LSL
(Laminated Structural Lumber). From these several process to reduce and
avoid the weaknesses of wood. And material workmanship of the results is
called engineered wood, not solid wood.
